Looking for a paediatrician in Genk: how to get an appointment quickly
Many parents in Genk find that they have to wait a long time for an appointment with a paediatrician. Yet you do not always have to wait for weeks. Below you can read when a paediatrician is useful, how to choose one and how to get an appointment quickly.

When do you go to the paediatrician?
For many complaints you can go to your GP (huisarts). A paediatrician is useful if you want a doctor who only sees children, for example:
- if your baby was born too early or needs follow-up after a hospital stay
- if you are worried about growth, feeding or development
- if your child often coughs, wheezes or has asthma
- for allergies or eczema that does not get better
- if your child is often ill and you want someone to examine them thoroughly
Do I need a referral letter?
No. In Belgium you can book an appointment with a paediatrician directly. A letter from your GP is useful, though, because the paediatrician then knows straight away why you are coming.
What should you look for when choosing?
- Waiting time. A new practice often still has space.
- Distance. With a sick child, you do not want to drive far.
- The same doctor. A regular paediatrician knows your child and your family.
- Language. If you prefer English, ask whether that is possible.
- Convention. Ask what a consultation costs (whether the doctor is conventioned, i.e. charges the official tariff).
