# Looking for a paediatrician in Genk: how to get an appointment quickly

Many parents in Genk find that they have to wait a long time for an appointment with a paediatrician. Yet you do not always have to wait for weeks. Below you can read when a paediatrician is useful, how to choose one and how to get an appointment quickly.

## When do you go to the paediatrician?

For many complaints you can go to your GP (huisarts). A paediatrician is useful if you want a doctor who only sees children, for example:

- if your baby was born too early or needs follow-up after a hospital stay
- if you are worried about growth, feeding or development
- if your child often coughs, wheezes or has asthma
- for allergies or eczema that does not get better
- if your child is often ill and you want someone to examine them thoroughly

## Do I need a referral letter?

No. In Belgium you can book an appointment with a paediatrician directly. A letter from your GP is useful, though, because the paediatrician then knows straight away why you are coming.

## What should you look for when choosing?

- **Waiting time.** A new practice often still has space.
- **Distance.** With a sick child, you do not want to drive far.
- **The same doctor.** A regular paediatrician knows your child and your family.
- **Language.** If you prefer English, ask whether that is possible.
- **Convention.** Ask what a consultation costs (whether the doctor is conventioned, i.e. charges the official tariff).

## A quick appointment in Sledderlo

Since September 2026 I have been holding consultations at Medpoint Genk, Sledderlo 48 bus A. There is no waiting list: new patients are welcome on Monday and Wednesday. You can book [online or by phone](https://www.kinderarts-genk.be/en/afspraak/). What to bring is explained on [New patients](https://www.kinderarts-genk.be/en/nieuwe-patienten/).

## And if it is urgent?

A consultation with the paediatrician is always by appointment. If your child is ill in the evening, at night or at the weekend and it cannot wait, call the GP out-of-hours service in Genk (huisartsenwachtpost Genk) on [089 20 10 90](tel:+3289201090). If life is in danger, call [112](tel:112). See [Doctor on duty](https://www.kinderarts-genk.be/en/dokter-van-wacht/).
